The year 2025 in Morocco was marked by the organization of major international sporting events. First, it was the Rabat Fan Zone which allowed intercultural exchanges between African students. It was followed by the U-17 African Cup of Nations (players under 17), the African Women's Futsal Cup, and the Mohammed VI international athletics meeting. But the big, highly anticipated sporting event is the African Cup of Nations (CAN) which began on December 21, 2025 until January 18, 2026. Morocco won the first match of the Cup against the Comoros by 2 goals to 0 on December 21, 2025. It is a founding sporting event on an African scale, which strengthens Morocco's diplomacy and its cultural influence throughout the world.

Prepared for several months, the CAN is a test for Morocco which will organize the Football World Cup in 2030 with Spain and Portugal. The important points of the organization of this CAN are the management of the flow of players and spectators, security coordination between the six host cities, the reliability of transport, and the quality of hospitality. Thirty European countries will broadcast the tournament, and 5,400 media accreditation requests have been registered. The ONMT expects 800,000 visitors during the competition, and the economic benefits are estimated at 10 billion dirhams. Morocco must absolutely succeed in this major African sporting event, because our country will be watched by the whole world. We have essential assets such as built or renovated stadiums, transport infrastructure (motorways and railways), the experience of state authorities who have already organized major events. But it is also an event that concerns all Moroccans, who must give the best welcome to players and spectators from all over the world and particularly from Africa.

An active Moroccan diplomacy on the bilateral and multilateral scenes in 2025

In addition to the sporting aspect, Morocco carried out intense diplomacy in 2025 both at the bilateral and international level. On the bilateral level, Morocco has strengthened its strategic cooperation with the United States, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Mauritania. On the international level, Morocco participated in the Arab-Islamic Emergency Summit in Doha on September 15, 2025, in solidarity with Qatar following the Israeli aggression against the sovereignty of this State. Morocco has also positioned itself as a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-2029 mandate.

Regional security and African cooperation: a pillar of Morocco’s international action

Our country also attaches particular importance to security issues, both in terms of the fight against terrorism and illegal immigration. This is how the first African Police Cooperation Center dedicated to the exchange of security information was inaugurated in Salé. Likewise, Morocco hosted the 93th General Assembly of INTERPOL in Marrakech, whose role is to preserve international security, particularly in the fight against organized crime. Morocco has also hosted other events such as the African Summit on Health Sovereignty in Dakhla, the International Congress on Climate Change in Essaouira, and the Model United Nations in Morocco which brought together students from around the world around the themes of peace, justice, and international cooperation.

UN Resolution 2797: a major diplomatic turning point for Morocco

But Morocco's main success during the year 2025 was UN Security Council Resolution 2797 of October 31, 2025. This resolution designates the Moroccan autonomy plan of 2007 as the "most serious, credible and realistic basis for resolving the Sahara conflict." This resolution is considered a major diplomatic turning point, strengthening Morocco's position, and reorienting the process towards a political solution based on autonomy rather than a referendum. Moreover, King Mohammed VI decreed October 31 as a public holiday for the Unity of the Moroccan nation from north to south.

2025, a founding year for Morocco's international leadership

In conclusion, we can consider the year 2025 to be favorable in terms of international relations. Morocco must continue in the years to come to implement proactive diplomacy to defend its interests, particularly concerning the autonomy plan for the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty which must be the subject of negotiations under the aegis of the UN. https://imrimaroc.org/chronique_suite.php 2025, year of Morocco internationally
